Post General Dannatt to Retire (Sun Online)

Army boss General Sir Richard Dannatt last night announced his retirement – after he was snubbed for the nation’s top military job.

Sir Richard, 57, who has blasted soldiers’ pay and conditions, was expected to become Chief of the Defence Staff next year.

But instead, current boss Air Chief Marshall Sir Jock Stirrup will stay until 2011 – a record five years in the job.

The snub to popular Sir Richard sparked fury in all ranks last night.

Soldiers believe the next chief must be from the Army as the force bears the brunt of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Navy boss Admiral Sir Jonathan Band, who is critical of cuts, was also passed over.

The snub was orchestrated by Defence Secretary Des Browne and sanctioned by PM Gordon Brown – who see Sir Jock as safe because he always toes the Government line.

Decorated hero Sir Richard will leave in just over a year.

A senior Army source said: “He was passed over because he spoke the truth.

“He will be a great loss, but ministers don’t care a stuff about that.”

The MoD confirmed Sir Richard’s retirement last night.

Sad to say that he who does not toe the party line will find himself out in the cold. Gone are the days when the truth wins over, some say that the ranks of faceless civilians really are the power behing the forces!
Pity the general will be consigned to the heap of those who wished to support and improve the lives of men and women serving their country and suffered for it.
