Post Cheaper Phone Calls From Battle Zones
A Defence Policy and Business news article:

All phone calls to the UK from troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo have been slashed from 89 pence per minute to 11 pence following a £1.4 million investment from the MOD.
Each week British troops on operations get 30 minutes of free calls to anywhere in the world (up from 20 minutes per week since October 2007). Any extra calls from theatre to home cost 11p per minute but now calls to home using hand-held satellite phones, which previously cost 89p per minute, have also been reduced to 11p.

This month the Government has invested £1.4 million to subsidise frontline call costs and so that all extra calls home now cost the same, no matter where troops are calling from and even if they are using hand-held satellite phones.

Defence Secretary Des Browne said:

"This funding boost will ensure that though our brave boys and girls may be far from home, they can always be in touch with their loved ones."

Subsidised calls home will apply in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo and there has also been a 20 per cent increase in the number of phones available for our forces to use.

In addition to cheaper calls home, our forces also have free internet access to email their family and friends. The number of computers that our personnel can access has recently doubled.

Specifically, since last October alone, an additional 30 internet PCs and 17 telephones have been installed in Iraq and 136 internet PCs and 128 telephones in Afghanistan. All portacabins where computers and phones are located have also been refurbished.

Troops can also contact home using the free system of e-blueys (email letters) which has been very successful and are very popular with the troops and their families at home who can also use the system to send a letter to theatre. An e-bluey is printed in an operational theatre within 24 hours of it being sent from the family home. In addition, postage of parcels and letters up to two kilograms is free to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo.
